Question: In your book, Natural Black Hair, in the section about doing wet-sets with rollers, are you combing each section before you wrap it on the roller, or just smoothing it over the roller uncombed? Please explain. Also, have you or your family had success with wet setting longer natural hair around 10-12 in? I've tried it before and it tends to turn out frizzy. Thanks.

Answer: Yes, you should use a comb to detangle your hair fully to do the wet set. It is the action of combing your hair, smoothing it with your fingers as you are combing it, and pulling it gently as you put the curler in it which will help you get a smoother curl. Your hair will dry the way you put it on the curlers so you want it to be as smooth as possible. Use the conditioner as a setting lotion to help smooth your hair. The two things that will make your hair frizzy are the products you are using and if your hair isn't thoroughly dry when you take it out of the curlers.

Make sure your hair has dried completely before you take out the curlers because the smallest bit of dampness will cause frizziness. You can use a bonnet dryer to speed up the drying process.

The longer your hair gets, the harder it is to do a wet set with curlers because you need bigger curlers. My sister does flat twists and uses curlers on the ends of her hair (see pages 36 to 38 in the book)
